Everyone has their favorite sports championship. I love them all. Not because of what sport it is but, more so, the opportunity to see how the players and coaches perform when everything is on the line.

Having said that, we are in the month of March and another session of March Madness. At the end of the day next Sunday, 68 teams will tee it up to battle for the NCAA basketball championship three weeks later.

This year is one of those years. Probably a dozen different teams have a legitimate chance to win it all. The winner will have at least one game that they are lucky to win. A number one seed will be eliminated early. And, it will be fun taking it all in.

Four national TV channels will be broadcasting all the games. A million or so chicken wings will be sold as the fans watch all four channels. Many will be clad in their favorite team’s colors and the beer will be especially refreshing when their team wins.

Let’s look at the participants (players and coaches). I give the repeat coaches (been there, done that) an edge the further they go. Media demands, travel, differences in game times and general confusion are all a part of the post season. The hype is amazing.

Having said that, there is something that can make a BIG difference, especially in the two game weekends. It is a weak area for human beings in  the first place and I don’t think most coaches really get the impact they can have on their team’s consistency of performance from game to game.

Here’s how it works:

Fully celebrate game one win and, of course every win after that. Allow the players to express their experience.

Only then do you begin your prep for the next game. The win is a high. You don’t want to lose them in their prep for who is next until they are back to ground zero.

Keep all prep short and sweet.
